Reader's Theater at Northside Library

Student Script

The grant funding came from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
The partnership was between the YMCA of Central Kentucky, Lexington Public Library Northside Branch and Fayette County School The Learning Center.

 Student Input

When Northside Library came to The Learning Center we wrote scripts on different books we read.  We were placed in different literature circles, so we could  have group discussions on the books.  Additionally, we got snacks once a week for six weeks. I loved that part!  They  took us to their library and introduced to all types of technology.  The Apple Computers were like flat screen televisions!  It was a great experience; we got to work in the music and video recording rooms.  We also learned how to use editing programs like Garage Band.   Several of my classmates, including myself, explored the amine section; they had quite a selection of books and magazines.  It made me want to get a library membership.   I can't wait to go up there on my free time out of school and check out some books!

  1. I am impressed by Jordan's writing, as well as the class exploration of the public library. The wonderful thing about the library is the way it is morphing in modern times. I had some fears in years past that the library might suffer because of technological advances that many young people find more interesting than books. I'm coming to the realization that the library is becoming even more important because it is the base of operations for all communications, not just the reading of a good book.
I feel a little silly now about my former fears/perception because I now realize that that is what the library has always been. Even in the days of The Library at Alexandria; the library was the center of communications. And we are talking scrolls here! Now that we have the ability to communicate in so many different ways the amount of involvement in text is growing exponentially. I think the concern now is to make sure that the quality of some text continues to not only measure up to what has come before, but hopefully surpass it. We know that we are going to have a plethora of thoughts to read. Just as in days of old, the question is going to be the quality of the thought behind the word. WORD

  2. This is so impressive! You guys did a wonderful job capturing the essence of these novels. It's neat that I was able to be there the first day you started reading and then watch all of it come together. Jordan, excellent description of the project and the process you guys went through to put it together. Nice acting, Zaelin, CJ, Dominic, April, Macie, Cade, and TY! I'm so proud of you guys. You represent TLC well!

  4. I read Loser. It was a good book to read and it was funny even though I didn't finish it in class. I want to finish the book because it was funny. I plan to finish during the summer.

  7. Northside was awesome!!!!!! Crash was my book. It was alright. I liked working on the game board, but I wish I didn't have to do all the work. Next time, I would rather work by myself. I hope Ms. Keene and Ms. Landrum come back next year.

  8. I am one of the students in the video! I did the bow at the end, which really made the video a lot better. Ms. Straney charted our progress with our scripts in class. It motivated me to do well, which is why I got to be in the video.

  14. I don't really like poems, but the Issac Murphy book was different. Regular poems talk about a lot of topics, but this one focused on the perspectives on one person's life. Plus, it was about horses, which I liked. It was also cool that Murphy was from the Lexington area.

  15. I thought the whole process was helpful. They brought materials and took us to the library. It made me interested when I probably would have been bored.
